    Teaching Teachers for the Future (TTF) Project: Development of the TTF TPACK survey instrument

    This paper presents a summary of the key findings of the TTF TPACK Survey developed and administered for the Teaching the Teachers for the Future (TTF) Project implemented in 2011. The TTF Project, funded by an Australian Government ICT Innovation Fund grant, involved all 39 Australian Higher Education Institutions which provide initial teacher education. TTF data collections were undertaken at the end of Semester 1 (T1) and at the end of Semester 2 (T2) in 2011. A total of 12881 participants completed the first survey (T1) and 5809 participants completed the second survey (T2). Groups of like-named items from the T1 survey were subject to a battery of complementary data analysis techniques. The psychometric properties of the four scales: Confidence - teacher items; Usefulness - teacher items; Confidence - student items; Usefulness- student items, were confirmed both at T1 and T2. Among the key findings summarised, at the national level, the scale: Confidence to use ICT as a teacher showed measurable growth across the whole scale from T1 to T2, and the scale: Confidence to facilitate student use of ICT also showed measurable growth across the whole scale from T1 to T2.     The Mismatch between Australian Population and General Practice Medical Workforce

    Aims: To review and analyse Australian general practitioner's workforce data for the 2000 to 2010 period by comparing this to Australian population trends and to make informed recommendations about GP workforce planning. Study Design: Descriptive analysis of the available Australian government data on GP workforce and the Australian population between 2000 and 2010. Place and Duration of Study: Griffith University, Australia, between April and November 2011. Methodology: Australian GP workforce data for the 2000 to 2010 period was obtained from the Australian Department of Health and Ageing (DoHA) website and population data was obtained from the Australian Bureau of Statistics website. A descriptive analysis of workforce trends using variables of interests such as overseas trained GPs, gender, age, professional services during the 11 year period was compared to population trends data. A new GP Workforce Index ratio (GPWIR = No. of GPs <35yrs ç Žo. of GPs 35yrs to 64yrs of age) was derived from the data and calculated for each year of the study period. Results: The ratio of female to male GPs has increased by 35% and the percentage of overseas graduates has increased by nearly 35% in the 11 year period, an indication that the 0.12% number of GPs as a percentage of Australian population between 2000 and 2010 was only sustained by increasing the intake of foreign trained graduates. Vocationally registered GPs have increased by 20% in same period. The GP workforce index ratio (GPWIR) decreased from 0.223 in 2000 to 0.118 in 2007; this was followed by a slight increase from 0.120 in 2008 to 0.128 in 2010. Conclusion: The impact that an increase in the number of female GPs graduating from medical schools may have on the overall number of GP services available to the Australian population requires further study, since it was noted in the literature that female GPs are more likely to work part-time than male GPs. The GPWIR may be a useful indicator for evaluating the proportion of the <35yrs old GPs as a proportion of overall GP workforce. Lower GPWIR may be associated with GP workforce shortage. GPWIR increased in the last 3 years of the study corresponding with an improvement in GP supply. In this study, the GPWIR proved to be more effective in predicting overall National GP workforce shortage trend than the DoHA GP per Population ratio of 0.71:1000 (Primarily used for regional and rural workforce shortage prediction).     Haulout site selection by southern elephant seals at Marion Island

    Using data from an ongoing mark-resight programme at Marion Island, we tested empirically whether southern elephant seals prefer certain terrestrial sites to others during the breeding, moulting and winter haulouts, and whether the pattern of site use is the same for different age and sex groups. Southern elephant seals preferred some sites, while discriminating against other sites, with different age and sex classes using different sites for certain haulout events. Wintering young animals did not show strong site selection. Some popular sites were used for all haulouts by all age and sex groups, and apparently have all the requirements of a good site for terrestrial haulout by southern elephant seals. Site selection becomes more apparent with age, suggesting the role of haulout experience in site selection

    One of S. Siegel, L. G. Allen, and T. Eissenberg's (1992) recent arguments in support of associative-learning explanations of colored aftereffects (CAEs) is that the contingencies underlying these effects are not constrained by simple stimulus dimensions, such as contour orientation. Specifically, the authors claim to have generated CAEs contingent on sets of spatiotopic relationships between orientation components of a pattern (as opposed to orientation components per se). The present article illustrates how Siegel et al.'s claims are compromised by their failure to adequately address the role of fixation and eye movements during CAE induction

    Factors predicting functional outcomes of cochlear implants in children

    This article reports the relationships between a large number of child- and family-related factors and children's functional outcomes, according to parental report, in the domains of spoken language communication, social skills and participation, academic achievement, and independence and identity, through a series of stepwise regression analyses. Parents of 247 children who had received cochlear implants in three eastern states of Australia completed a survey on their expectations and experiences of their children's outcomes with cochlear implants. A number of the independent variables were found to be associated, either positively or negatively, with children's outcomes.     Disability support services in Queensland, Australia: Identifying service gaps through spatial analysis

    A dearth of research has utilized spatial research methods to clarify the dispersion of disability specific services in relation to people with disability in priority areas, and urban and remote settings. Consequently, this study sought to investigate the dispersion of disability support services for people in localities within Queensland, Australia. Four datasets from two sources were used to establish (i) the geographic dispersion of disability support services in relation to localities within three regional disability level classifications (areas having high, low, or intermediate levels of disability), and (ii) the level of remoteness of localities within the three regional disability level classifications. Two separate hotspot analyses were conducted to ascertain regions with high, low, or intermediate numbers and percentages of people with disability in Queensland. Furthermore, network analyses were conducted to ascertain the travel time among localities within these settings. Finally, inferential analyses using the Kruskal-Wallis test were conducted to ascertain the difference in travel times to disability support services across localities within the three regional disability level classifications, and simple linear regressions were conducted to clarify the association between locality regional disability level classification and remoteness. The findings confirm that localities within areas classified as having low numbers or percentages of people with disability experience significantly higher travel times to all disability support service types: support and advocacy, aids and equipment, and information and referral. The findings also confirm that these localities are associated with having a higher level of remoteness. The study findings suggest that areas with low numbers and percentages of people with disability in Queensland may be lacking proximately available disability support services. Furthermore, the study adds evidence to the notion that people with disability in rural and remote areas may be moving to urban centres to be closer to services

    Measuring the use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in the classroom

    In 2003, the “ICT Curriculum Integration Performance Measurement Instrument” was developed froman extensive review ofthe contemporary international and Australian research pertaining to the definition and measurement of ICT curriculum integration in classrooms (Proctor, Watson, &amp; Finger, 2003). The 45-item instrument that resulted was based on theories and methodologies identified by the literature review. This paper describes psychometric results from a large-scale evaluation of the instrument subsequently conducted, as recommended by Proctor, Watson, and Finger (2003). The resultant 20-item, two-factor instrument, now called “Learning with ICTs: Measuring ICT Use in the Curriculum,” is both statistically and theoretically robust. This paper should be read in association with the original paper published in Computers in the Schools(Proctor, Watson, &amp; Finger, 2003) that described in detail the theoretical framework underpinning the development of the instrument
